Bailey senior can't stay out of the Mungana affair and suggests to the Sydney press that Theodore should sue the Queensland Government for libel if they refuse to indict him for fraud, now there's a nice irony, Bailey using libel and fraud in the same sentence. Theodore groans, with enemies everywhere he doesn't need friends like John Bailey right now. And the silly old dot's Aboriginals and firearms boast from Tuesday has come home to roost in Federal Parliament, Arthur Blakeley has to respond to criticism from the Manchester Guardian about the poor treatment of the natives in Central Australia. With mouths like Bailey and Coote, C.A.G.E. is sure to get plenty of publicity. Terry and mates just about to leave Deep Well when Jim O'Neill turns up, Freddy Blakeley's mate of many years, Terry and O'Neill acquainted from Tanami days have a quick chat re mining matters then push on. Later meet a party of Victorians in three cars struggling through the Depot Sandhills, having a devil of a time in the loose sand, new chums all. Terry despairs, this lot shouldn't have been let go north of Port Augusta. Arrive Horseshoe Bend late afternoon, Gus Elliot opens the bar. Lasseter and the Thornycroft still on the rails and travelling well, should get to the Crystal Street station at Broken Hill tomorrow, so far Harry and the Captain are the only men from the Company making any progress west although Blakeley and Sutherland should leave Sydney this evening ..... providing they don't miss the train again. Arthur Blakeley has to rise in Parliament again to answer questions re the treatment of the Aboriginals in north Australia, of all things the Manchester Guardian has roundly criticised him regarding rumours of ill treatment, and he has only just replied to the Secretary of the Association for the Protection of Native Races, defending the need for the armed C.A.G.E expedition. John Bailey's big mouth is going to cause more grief yet. |
