Blakeley starts the day early and on foot looking for a way through the jumbled sandhills, it soon clear that the only possible way is north, it wont get them much closer to Mount Marjorie but at least they will be moving. He notes the smoke signals are more numerous this morning but concludes it is only the locals telling each other were they...and the Expedition are. He is unconcerned.

It is a day of matting, cutting mulga and constant walking without much headway west, Mount Marjorie is occasionally sighted dead ahead. The men discover many Aboriginal tracks much to Mickey's discomfort, he is a long way out of his territory and asks Blakeley if he can sleep under the truck that night.

The very weary men make an early day of it but camp is not in a good location. There is little wood for the fire and it is cold. Blakeley discovers that Lasseter has been telling Mickey that he (Lasseter) is the Boss in an attempt to coerce information from him, Blakeley has a quite word with Mick and reminds him of the hierarchy of the Expedition. It hasn't occurred to Lasseter that Mickey knows absolutely nothing about the country around him.
