Freddy Colson sets about repairing Sunrise, the well used vehicle looking a little odd sporting four brand new boots, they'll be needed, Freddy has plenty of work lined up.

Late this morning Lasseter and Johns foolishly decide to cross a narrow neck of Lake Amadeus, the inevitable happens and the camels bog, several desperate hours later the exhausted camels and men make it to the southern shore. Luckily the camels are easily caught but the abandoned stores have to be recovered. It is a late and dispirited camp close by Lake Amadeus, but they are across.

Blakeley and his mates get unstuck from the sand pit at last and set off for Dashwood Creek in the weary Thornycroft, Taylor despairs of making the crossing as the travelling is through heavy low gear country aggravating the dreadful knocking in the engine, they may get there today.

The weather clears at Oodnadatta and Coote is away early, arrives Alice Springs at midday and with a hide as thick as a rhino, busily takes on the role of the new leader of C.A.G.E. in the field. oblivious to the coolish reception everywhere. His plans frustrated by Colson's reticence who tells the impatient pilot his questions will be answered when Blakeley returns at the end of the week.

The Thornycroft limps into the old camp at Houston's Soak late afternoon, Blakeley declares camp for a couple of days and the relieved men set about a thorough wash up and extensive repairs to the truck.

Simon Rieff issued with miners right No. 841 today. Now that is nice timing.
