Except for the boiling radiator, (the truck used 33 gallons of water for the day and Micky was right, the damn machine is thirstier than a camel) the C.A.G.E. team has a trouble free return to Illbilla and find all well at the base camp, then to the waterhole for a souse. Taylor plans a condenser for the truck's radiator, it shouldn't be too difficult and that evening the radio comes out, Lasseter wants news of any other expeditions out searching for his reef. It's tiring listening through the earphones but Mickey thoroughly enjoys the concertina music, reminds him of Archie Giles and it does take his mind of the Luritja lurking somewhere close by. He asks Blakeley if he can sleep under the truck. Taylor notes Mickey's concern and wonders if the men are camping too far from the truck, Blakeley reassures but Sutherland plans some mischief for the morning Blakeley frets over Colson's whereabouts. Hall arrives in Adelaide, so far so good, Oodnadatta tomorrow. Wondering what he's got himself into but it sounds interesting if not a little dodgy, ah well this is Australia 1930. |
