Pittendrigh and Hamre leave Alice Springs at 8.45a.m. on their way to Illbilla to make contact with Taylor and Johns and continue the search for Lasseter and his reef. They circle to the north and south of the Ehrenbergs but are uncertain of their location and there are no smoke signals from Taylor who can't see or hear them, running low on fuel and apparently good judgment, they turn to Alice Springs. the plane runs out of fuel north of Haasts Bluff about thirty miles west of Dashwood Creek. The Aboriginals inform Taylor at about noon that they saw a plane to the north of Illbilla heading west and Rolfe returns to camp stating he has seen the plane to the south. The airmen discuss their options over a meal and tea and of all things decide to walk to Alice Springs, Their supplies consist of 2 tins of Rex pie, 2 of sausages and a tin of sheep's tongues, a bottle of Horlicks malted milk tablets and two packets of eight biscuits. They head off east carrying the planes compass in a billy can and four gallons of water in three water bags. It's a very hot afternoon and the evening finds them camped in a sea of mulga quite uncertain of their whereabouts. Colson and Bailey arrive at camp 56 at 7.30, famished, their tucker ran out yesterday and they were delayed by the heavy rain. the results of their long ride, negative as usual. Terry declares today the Sunday rest day, the camelmen will appreciate that. Terry and Bird make preparations for the long haul into civilisation.
